Risk Reduction

Risk Reduction, a Division of the Manhattan Fire Department, administers city ordinances related to health, safety, and the protection of residents and their property. Code officers also review plans and issue building permits for new construction, additions, and alterations. Building, moving permits, curb cut permits, mobile home permits, as well as electrical, mechanical, and plumbing permits, along with all contractor and trade licenses, are also issued by the Risk Reduction Division.

Significant Changes to the 2024 International Residential, Building, and Existing Building Codes

Since the late 1970’s, the City of Manhattan has updated its building and fire codes by adopting the most current edition of the codes every three years. The City will be updating its codes again this year by adopting the 2024 International Codes and the 2023 National Electrical Code. Risk Reduction supports the adoption of the new codes and over the course of the next few months will be meeting with various stakeholder groups to present the significant changes and gain feedback on the changes. Contractors and tradespeople licensed in Manhattan are impacted by changes in the code and we recognize these groups as major stakeholders in the adoption process.
